FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» October 17, 1995: The Indians shut out Seattle, 4-0, behind the pitching of Dennis Martinez, Julian Tavarez, and Jose Mesa, to clinch the AL pennant.

» May 31, 1996: The Indians bang 18 hits to beat Milwaukee 10–4, but the biggest hit is when Albert Belle decks Brewers 2B Fernando Vina with a vicious forearm in the 8th inning to set off a two-team brawl. Belle was on first after being hit with a pitch. In the 9th, Milwaukee reliever Terry Burrows throws three inside pitches before he finally plunks Belle. Tribe reliever Julian Tavarez then throws a pitch behind the back of Mike Matheny, who charges the mound. Both benches clear and during the brawl Tavarez slams down ump Joe Brinkman and Belle knuckles Brewer Steve Sparks. Belle, Tavarez, and Matheny will each receive 5-game suspensions for their brawling.

» November 13, 1996: The Indians trade P Julian Tavarez, 2B Jose Vizcaino, IF Jeff Kent, and a player to be named to the Giants in exchange for slugging 3B Matt Williams and a player to be named. Williams, with the Giants for 10 years, underwent shoulder surgery in mid-August and missed the remainder of the season.

» November 16, 2000: The Cubs sign free agent P Julian Tavarez to a 2-year contract.

» April 29, 2001: Cubs starter Julian Tavarez apologizes to fans after making derogatory remarks toward San Francisco fans the previous day. He is later fined by the club.

» October 6, 2001: At Wrigley, Julian Tavarez takes a no-hitter into the eighth inning against Pittsburgh before giving up a bases loaded single—the only hit he allows—to Mendy Lopez. Roosevelt Brown drives in seven runs on a pair of 3-run home runs and a sac fly. Sammy Sosa has three hits, three runs and three RBIs, including an inside-the-park homer for No. 63.

» March 27, 2002: In need of relief help, the Cubs trade RHP Julian Tavarez and three prospects to the Marlins for reliever Antonio Alfonseca and RHP Matt Clement. The three prospects -- C Ryan Jorgensen, and pitchers Jose Cuetro and Dontrelle Willis -- are rated among the Cubs' top 20 prospects. Alfonseca, nicknamed El Pulpo (octopus) because he was born with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, will replace the injured Tom Gordon.
