FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 31, 1998: The Rangers trade P Darren Oliver and 3B Fernando Tatis to the Cardinals in exchange for P Todd Stottlemyre and SS Royce Clayton. The Rangers get 3B Todd Zeile from the Marlins in exchange for 3B Jose Santo and P Daniel De Young. Tatis will hit .287 with 11 homers this year in St. Louis, but Zeile will help by reaching base 11 straight times during a critical three game stretch in September.

» August 23, 1998: The Pirates defeat the Cardinals, 4–3, despite five hits, including a home run, by St. Louis 3B Fernando Tatis. Mark McGwire also hits his 53rd homer for the Cards.

» April 23, 1999: The Cardinals defeat the Dodgers, 12–5, as 3B Fernando Tatis sets a major league record by hitting two grand slams in a single inning. His two homers came in St. Louis' 11–run 3rd inning. He also sets a record with eight RBIs in the inning, while LA P Chan Ho Park becomes the 1st pitcher this century -- and only the 2nd ever -- to surrender two grand slams in a single frame. Bill Phillips of the Pirates did so in 1890. Park became the 36th major-leaguer to serve up two slams to the same player in his career.

» May 1, 1999: The Cardinals defeat the Expos, 16-5, as rookie OF J.D. Drew scores five runs for St. Louis, and 3B Fernando Tatis hits his 8th home run and drives home 3.

» August 9, 1999: A total of five grand slams are hit on the day, marking the first time it has happened in 129 years of major league baseball. The bases loaded pokes are hit by Fernando Tatis of St. Louis (against the Phillies), Jose Vidro of Montreal (against the Padres), Mike Lowell of Florida (against the Giants), Bernie Williams of the Yankees (against the Athletics), and Jay Buhner of Seattle (against the White Sox).

» April 22, 2000: The Rockies clip the Cardinals, 7-6. Mark McGwire and Fernando Tatis homer for St. Louis as the Cards set an National League mark for most home runs in the month of April (42).

» April 26, 2000: The Cardinals whitewash the Brewers, 7-0, as Rick Ankiel, Jim Edmonds, and Fernando Tatis all hit home runs. This gives St. Louis 50 homers for April, setting a new ML mark.

» December 14, 2000: The Expos obtain 3B Fernando Tatis and P Britt Reames from the Cardinals for pitchers Dustin Hermanson and Steve Kline. The Cards, snubbed by Mike Hampton, pick up a starter in Hermanson. Tatis missed 54 games after an April 29 groin injury.
