The rough hewn Tabor had 95 RBI as a Red Sox rookie in 1939 but was overshadowed that year by another Red Sox freshman, Ted Williams. In a 1940 game against the Browns, Williams, Jimmie Foxx, and Joe Cronin hit consecutive homers, Bobby Doerr tripled, and then Tabor hit the fourth homer in five batters. His 21 homers in 1940 and 101 RBI in 1941 were career highs. (JK)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY » July 4, 1939: The Red Sox's Jim Tabor hits four HRs as Boston sweeps Philadelphia 17-7 and 18­12. Three of his HRs, including a record-tying two grand slams, come in the nightcap. He totals 19 bases and 11 RBI in the two slugfests. » June 23, 1940: In Cleveland, 56,659 watch the Indians split with Boston. Cleveland wins the opener 4–1 for their 8th win in a row, then Boston wins the nitecap 2–0 on two Jim Tabor home runs. In game 1, Ted Williams and Doc Cramer collide chasing a fly ball. Williams is knocked unconscious and the ball goes for an inside-the-park home run. » August 2, 1942: At Detroit, the Tigers sweep a pair from the Red Sox, 8–4 and 6–2, to knock Boston out of 2nd place. Dizzy Trout wins the opener, helping himself with a 3-run home run. Virgil Trucks wins the nitecap, giving up a 9th inning home run to Ted Williams. Along with Jim Tabor, CF Dom DiMaggio has a homer in the opener, then adds an unassisted DP in the nitecap. » May 30, 1943: The Red Sox are also having trouble hitting the major league's balata ball, as Jim Tabor hits the first Sox homer at Fenway Park in a DH sweep of the Tigers. The Bosox win 3–0 behind Dick Newsome, and 5–1 behind Lou Lucier. Williams had set the record with Jimmie Foxx, Joe Cronin, and Jim Tabor in 1940. » May 9, 1961: Jim Gentile becomes the 3rd player to hit grand slams in consecutive innings (Tony Lazzeri in 1936, Jim Tabor in 1939: Rudy York in 1946 also hit two grand slams, but not in consecutive innings) when he belts one off Pedro Ramos in the first and adds another off Paul Giel in the 2nd. His eight RBI in consecutive innings set a ML record. Gentile also tacks on a sacrifice fly to give him a club record nine RBI in the 13–5 drubbing of the Twins. » May 10, 1999: The Red Sox pound the Mariners, 12-4, as SS Nomar Garciaparra leads the way with three home runs, including two grand slams. Garciaparra drives home 10 of Boston's runs as he clouts a bases loaded homer in the 1st, a 2-run shot in the 3rd, and another grand slam in the 8th. Nomar is the first Bosox since Jim Tabor, in 1939, to slam two slams in a game, and just the 9th in ML history. Robin Ventura last did it, in 1995.
