Called up by the Phillies in mid-1927, Sweetland defeated Boston 5-4 in his ML debut,
but lost 25 of his next 29 decisions over two seasons. In 1929, when he managed a
13-11 record despite a 5.11 ERA, one of his wins was an 11-hit shutout at Pittsburgh.

»August 2, 1929: In the 9th inning at Philadelphia, 1B Don Hurst cracks his 6th home run in as many games, a major-league record up to this time. In the six games, Hurst had no other hits. The Phils win 2–0 over Pittsburgh, with Les Sweetland allowing 11 hits in the shutout to beat Larry French.

The Reds finally score, but lose to the Cubs, 4–2, in the first of two. Guy Bush beats Larry Benton. Chicago takes the nitecap, 7–3, behind Les Sweetland as Jack Ogden is pinned with the loss. Rookie OF Vince Barton has five hits in the two games, including a pair of homers in game 2.
