The major league standard is 17 games, set by Oscar Grimes of the Chicago Cubs in 1922. OF Jermaine Dye brings home six of Kansas City's runs with four hits, including a pair of homers. » April 9, 2000: The Twins defeat the Royals, 13-7. In the process, they become the 1st teams in history to each hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the same game. Ron Coomer, Jacque Jones, and Matt LeCroy hit consecutive blasts for Minnesota in the 6th inning, followed by three in a row by Carlos Beltran, Jermaine Dye, and Mike Sweeney of Kansas City an inning later.

The Royals defeat the Tigers, 7–3, in a game marked by a 6th inning brawl set off when KC 1B Mike Sweeney charges Detroit P Jeff Weaver after Weaver calls him a profane name. Numerous punches are thrown as both benches and bullpens clear. After a 12–minute delay, the game resumes with Sweeney, KC coach Al Nipper, and Detroit coach Doug Mansolino ejected from the contest. Sweeney will be suspended 10 games for his actions, and Detroit catcher Robert Fick eight games. Five other players and four coaches will also be disciplined.

Carlos Beltran hits a grand slam and adds a solo homer in the 11th to pace the Royals to a 10–7 win over Texas. His solo shot is the first of three consecutive home runs in the 11th, as Mike Sweeney and Joe Randa follow suit. They became just the 2nd team to hit at least three consecutive home runs in extra innings. The Twins had four consecutive home runs, from Tony Oliva, Bob Allison, Jimmie Hall and Harmon Killebrew, in the 11th inning, on May 2, 1964. Neifi Perez homers for KC, and Alex Rodriguez hits two for Texas.

Two contests in the American League go 14 innings. Geronimo Gil hits a 2-out 14th inning homer to give Baltimore a 6–5 victory over Minnesota, while the Yankees overcome a straight steal of home by Mike Sweeney to beat the Royals, 3–2. Bernie Williams hits an RBI single to give Ramiro Mendoza (8-3) the win.

Going, going, Yan. For the 2nd day in a row, Tampa Bay's Esteban Yan gives up a 2-out homer in the 9th, and it costs him his closer's job. Yesterday, Raul Ibanez hits a 2-run homer to give Kansas City a 6–5 win. Today, Brent Mayne ties the score with a solo home run, then Mike Sweeney ices it for KC, 7–3, in the 12th with a 3-run shot. Ibanez adds a homer.

Mike Sweeney of the Kansas City Royals and Manny Ramirez of the Boston Red Sox are locked in a tight race for the American League batting title. After play today, Sweeney has a lead of less than .001 over Ramirez, .346578 to .346062. But, by Thursday, Ramirez will move ahead by .003099 after going 4–for–11 to raise his average to .3465116 while Sweeney will go 2–for–10 to put his mark at .343413.
