The brother of pitcher Darrell Sutherland, Gary was a spray-hitting utility man for Philadelphia when he was selected by Montreal in the 1968 expansion draft. He was the Expos' second baseman for much of their first two seasons, but was sent down in 1972 and sold to Houston. A regular again with Detroit, he led the Tigers with 157 hits in 1974. Sutherland was a backup guard on three UCLA national champion basketball teams. (CC)
