The solidly built Vietnam veteran bounced between the minors and majors, mostly as
a
pinch hitter, until Sparky Anderson brought him to Detroit as a DH. Thriving on
righthanded pitching, Summers hit .313 with 20 homers in 1979 and .297 with 17 homers
the following year.
