A weak-hitting wartime regular shortstop, Sullivan turned down a University of Wisconsin
football scholarship to play pro baseball. In a 1947 game he fielded a grounder behind
second and "centered" the ball between his legs to the waiting second baseman, Eddie
Lyons. The ball went over Lyons's head and a run scored.
