Sullivan was a Red Sox workhorse in the mid-1950s. He went 18-13 in 1955, tying for the league lead in wins, and leading in starts (35) and innings pitched (260). That summer, he served up Stan Musial's 12th-inning, All-Star Game-winning home run. Sullivan was the tallest pitcher in the AL (6'6-1/2") when he was traded to Philadelphia for the NL's taller pitcher, 6'8" Gene Conley, in December of 1960. His 3-16 record in 1961 for the 47-107 Phillies dropped his lifetime record below .500. (PB)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 21, 1954: Boston rookie Frank Sullivan makes his first start and beats the Yankees at the Stadium, 6–3. Sullivan strikes out Mickey Mantle three times before Mickey clocks one over the auxiliary scoreboard into the right-CF bleachers.

» May 6, 1955: At Fenway, Mickey Mantle lines a first inning solo shot into the Yankee bullpen, and Bob Turley shuts out Boston the rest of the way for a 6–0 New York win. Frank Sullivan is the losing pitcher.

» July 12, 1955: In the All-Star Game in Milwaukee, the AL takes a 5-run lead on a 3-run HR by Mickey Mantle off Robin Roberts, only to see the NL tie it. Braves P Gene Conley strikes out the side in the 12th, and Stan Musial of the Cards homers off Frank Sullivan of the Red Sox to win it.

» April 22, 1956: Yankee P Don Larsen slams a HR with the bases loaded off Frank Sullivan of the Red Sox, as New York wins 13-6.

» September 21, 1958: At Fenway Park, the Red Sox complete a three game sweep of the Senators, all by 2–0 shut outs. The Boston winning pitchers were Tom Brewer, Frank Sullivan and Ike Delock. Today's win was marred when Ted Williams, in a fit of anger, flings his bat into the stands striking Joe Cronin's housekeeper, Gladys Heffernan, in the face. She is not badly hurt, and Williams is very apologetic. But American League President Will Harridge will fine Williams for a bat-throwing incident

» July 9, 1959: The Red Sox club the Yankees, 14–6 before 30,253, the largest crowd at Fenway so far this year. Frank Sullivan is the winner. Wertz, Williams, and Avila club homers. Williams and Avila drive in seven runs.

» June 17, 1960: A 2-run home run off Wynn Hawkins at Cleveland Municipal Stadium makes Ted Williams the 4th player in ML history to hit 500 home runs. The Red Sox win 3–1 behind Frank Sullivan's 12 strikeouts.

» December 15, 1960: The biggest trade in history? The Phils lose more than two 1/2 inches when they acquire P Frank Sullivan from the Red Sox for 6' 9" Gene Conley. In the next two years, Conley will win 26 games for the Sox, the 3rd Boston team he will play for: Conley started with the Boston Braves in their last year before moving to Milwaukee, and played several seasons with the Celtics as Bill Russell's backup.

» April 23, 1961: Art Mahaffey fans a batter in each inning and 17 in all, a Phillies' record, while beating the Cubs, 6–0. The Phils win the first game 1-0 behind Frank Sullivan.

» August 19, 1961: The Phils rally in the 9th, but strand 11 and lose, 4–3 to Milwaukee. For the hapless Quakers, it is their 22nd loss in a row. For the Braves, it is their 9th win in a row. The Phils have 13 hits off Tony Cloninger, the winner, while Frank Sullivan allows just 7. The Braves score all their runs in the 3rd, the big blow being Frank Thomas' 2-run homer.

» April 29, 1962: In the Mets' 7-run 4th inning, Frank Thomas is twice hit by pitches, from Art Mahaffey and Frank Sullivan of the Phils. Two plunks in an inning are the major-league record set in 1959 by the only other player to whom it has happened—Reds pitcher Willard Schmidt. The Mets win 8–0, then lose the 2nd game 10–2.
