Sukeforth was a backup catcher in the NL for 10 seasons, playing more than 100 games only in 1931. He served as a Dodger coach for many years and, for two days in 1947 after Leo Durocher's suspension, was interim manager. (NLM)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» March 14, 1932: Babe Herman is traded to Cincinnati by the Dodgers. Catching prospect Ernie Lombardi goes with him as a throw in, making it one of Cincy's best trades ever. The Dodgers acquire Tony Cuccinello, Joe Stripp, and Clyde Sukeforth.

» April 15, 1947: Facing Johnny Sain, Jackie Robinson goes hitless in three trips in his debut but handles 11 chances at 1B, a new position for him, in a 5–3 Brooklyn win over the Braves. Coach Clyde Sukeforth, interim manager and the man credited with first scouting Robinson, guides the team to two wins and a loss before he steps down.

» December 5, 1955: The Cardinals buy 41-year-old Ellis Kinder from the Bosox. He will team up with the like-aged Walker Cooper to form just the second 40+ battery. Curt Davis and Clyde Sukeforth, in 1945, are the other duo.
