Stewart was a pesky switch-hitter whose aggressiveness was as big an asset as his speed. After Ken Hubbs's death in 1964, Stewart was his replacement at second base but played just 61 games there, serving as a handyman the remainder of his career. (JCA)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 23, 1970: How do you spell relief? Don Gullett strikes out six straight batters and pitches four innings with no runners reaching base in beating the host Mets, 7–5. Gullett strikes out eight in the last four innings. The Reds win on Jimmy Stewart's 3-run pinch homer off Tom Seaver.

» August 27, 1971: Pinch hitter Jimmy Stewart leads the Reds to a win as he hits a 9th inning bases loaded triple against the Cardinals, then scores on Pete Rose's sac fly. The Reds score five in the 9th to win, 8–7.

» November 29, 1971: In three blockbuster deals, the Cubs trade P Ken Holtzman to the A's for OF Rick Monday; the Giants trade P Gaylord Perry and SS Frank Duffy to the Indians for P Sam McDowell; and the Reds trade 1B Lee May, 2B Tommy Helms, and OF Jimmy Stewart to the Astros for 2B Joe Morgan, OF Cesar Geronimo, and P Jack Billingham. This trade, criticized in the Cincinnati press, is one of the best in Reds history, and puts the wheels on the big Red Machine, as future Hall of Famer Morgan will win two MVPs.
