On June 18, 1953, Stephens had three hits in one inning against the Tigers, but he spent his most promising ML years as a late-inning substitute for Ted Williams and was often called Williams's "caddy." From 1955 through 1959, he averaged nearly 120 games per season but only 1.67 at-bats per game. Even after being traded to the Orioles in 1960 (Williams's final season), he never became a ML regular. FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 18, 1953: Red Sox rookie OF Gene Stephens becomes the only AL player to get three hits in the same inning, as Boston scores 17 in the seventh inning in a 23-3 romp over Detroit. The Red Sox send 23 to the plate in the seventh, getting 14 hits and six walks before 3B George Kell flies out to end it.

» July 13, 1959: The Red Sox sweep their 5-game series with New York with a 13–3 rout featuring a big 6th inning. Gene Stephens pinch runs for Ted Williams and, when the Sox bat around, Stephens then hits a grand slam.

» June 9, 1960: George Strickland's 2-run homer in the 6th is the winning margin in Cleveland's 3–2 win over the Red Sox. With the Orioles losing a pair to Detroit, Cleveland stretches its American League lead to one 1/2 games. After the game, the Red Sox send outfielder Gene Stephens to the Orioles for OF Willie Tasby.

» June 7, 1961: The O's trade OF Gene Stephens to the A's for 1B Marv Throneberry.
