The only member of the Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance infield left out of Franklin P. Adams's poem, Steinfeldt was a reliable third baseman with an unusually powerful arm. He originally hoped for a theatrical career but did so well in a baseball game put on by his touring troupe that he switched to the diamond. After eight years with the Reds, he was traded to the Cubs in 1906 and responded with his best season, leading the NL in hits (176) and RBI (83) and batting .327. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 8, 1898: Rookie Harry Steinfeldt, the "wonder from Wonderville," replaces injured Bid McPhee at 2B for the Reds, gets three hits against Louisville, and handles nine chances afield.

» July 11, 1903: In Cincinnati, the 2nd place Giants edge the Reds, 8-6, although the Reds pile on Joe McGinnity for five runs in the 7th. Christy Mathewson then relieves and a pickoff by C Jack Warner of a napping Harry Steinfeldt at 3B prevents further scoring.

» March 6, 1906: Rookie owner Charles W. Murphy puts the last pieces of a Cubs dynasty in place, trading rookie infielder Hans Lobert and lefthander Jake Weimer to the Cincinnati Reds for 3B Harry Steinfeldt. Not a heavy hitter, Steinfeldt completes the Tinker-Evers-Chance infield.

» July 20, 1906: Against Christy Mathewson, the Cubs overcome a 3-2 deficit with four runs in the 8th inning to win, 6-3. Harry Steinfeldt's 2-run triple puts the Cubs ahead to stay.

» June 29, 1907: The Pirates top the Cubs 2-1 as CF Tommy Leach cuts down Harry Steinfeldt at the plate in the 9th innings. Deacon Phillippe is the winner.

» September 15, 1926: The Yankees beat the Indians, 6–4, as Bob Meusel drives home three runs with three sacrifice flies. This ties the major-league record set by Harry Steinfeldt in 1909. Bob Shawkey is the winning hurler.
