Steele survived when Cardinals manager Roger Bresnahan dropped five pitchers following a 63-90 finish in 1910. He worked 287 innings and led the NL in losses with an 18-19 record in 1911. The following year he was hit hard, 245 hits in 194 innings. He went to the bullpen, then to the Dodgers, and finally to the minors. (FJO)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 22, 1911: A crowd of 28,000 see Christy Mathewson come back against the Cards to win, 10–2, as the Giants riddle Bill Steele.

» April 21, 1912: Reds SS Jimmy Esmond, a .195 hitter, hits the first home run at Redland (later, Crosley) Field, off Bill Steele. The inside-the-park blow is his only roundtripper of the year. Nobody will hit one out of the Cincinnati park until Pat Duncan does it on June 2, 1921. Esmond's 3-run homer leads the Reds to a 7–1 over the Cardinals.

» June 1, 1912: The Giants get back on the winning track by hammering Bill Steele and a reliever for 16 hits to win, 13–4. Christy Mathewson picks up the win, allowing 13 hits along the way.

» July 11, 1914: The Giants outhit the Cardinals, 18-16, and win 13–9 in St. Louis. Christy Mathewson goes all the win, walking none but allowing three home runs. Bill Steele takes the Redbird defeat.
