An excellent outfielder and good basestealer, the 150-lb Statz had little power. His best ML year was 1923 with the Cubs, when he hit .319, with 110 runs scored, 209 hits, and 29 stolen bases. He arrived in the majors in 1919 directly from Holy Cross College but ended up playing 18 years with Los Angeles of the Pacific Coast League, a minor league record. For many years he held the record (since broken by Henry Aaron and Pete Rose) for most games played in organized baseball with 3,473. (LRD)
