First signed by the Mets, Stanton was acquired by the Angels in the 1971 deal that
also brought them Nolan Ryan. He hit three home runs in a July 10, 1973 game at Baltimore
to tie an Angel record. He led California with 14 HR and 82 RBI in 1975, and was
the 1977 expansion Mariners' MVP, hitting a club-high 27 HR.

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
»September 28, 1970: In his first big league start, Mets' outfielder Leroy Stanton leads off the first with a triple, his first ML hit, but is knocked on the head by the relay throw, and is forced to leave the game. His pinch runner scores and the Mets go on to win, 6–3, on 2-run homers in the 9th and 10th by Clendenon and Garrett. Hoyt Wilhelm is the loser in his only Cub decision.
»December 10, 1971: The Angels trade SS Jim Fregosi to the Mets for four players, including OF Leroy Stanton and P Nolan Ryan. This will rank as probably the Angels' best trade.
