FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 5, 1996: After the California Angels score three runs in the top of the 1st inning, the Oakland Athletics respond with 13 of their own in the bottom half to mark the highest scoring 1st inning by two teams in major league history. The 13 runs is one short of the record. DH Matt Stairs ties a major league mark with six RBIs in the frame. The Athletics go on to post a 16-8 victory.

» July 27, 1996: In Toronto, Joe Carter becomes the 3rd player to hit a homer into the upper level at the SkyDome, a 3-run shot that carries 483 feet. Geronimo Berroa and Matt Stairs homer for the A's, the 23rd straight game the A's have collected a homer run. But the Jays beat the A's, 6–4.

» August 27, 1997: Indian teammates honor Jim Thome by wearing their socks high, a fashion statement they'll continue into the World Series. But today they might've shaved their heads instead as Matt Williams drives in a major-league record tying six runs in a 10-run 4th as the Indians beat California, 10–4. Williams has a 3-run double and a 3-run home run. In between his hits, Marquis Grissom clouts a grand slam. Williams six ribbies in an inning is a club record. The last batter to knock in six in a frame was Matt Stairs, on July 5, 1996.

» June 2, 2001: The red-hot Cubs push their winning streak to 12 games, beating Milwaukee, 10–4. Matt Stairs hits a 3-run homer, while Sosa and Rondell White add 2-run shots, all off Paul Rigdon. Kevin Tapani is the winning pitcher. The streak is the longest by the Cubbies since they won 15 in 1936. The streak ends tomorrow.

» June 7, 2001: The Cubs complete sweep of Cardinals, winning 4–3, and posting their 15th win in 16 games. Cub fans haven't seen that since 1945. Matt Morris takes a no hitter into the 7th before Matt Stairs 2-out double opens the door. Rondell White's single in the 10th inning drives home Sammy Sosa for the winner. Chicago takes a five game lead over St. Louis in the Central Division with the win.

» January 25, 2002: The Brewers sign free agent OF Matt Stairs to a 1-year contract.

» December 15, 2002: The Pirates agree to terms with free agent OF Matt Stairs.
