Home to the National Association’s Brown Stockings as early as 1875, Sportsman’s Park added a second deck in 1909 and seating was extended to the foul poles in 1925, while the outfield bleachers were constructed in 1926. When the Browns moved to Baltimore they sold the park to August Busch, who promptly renamed it Busch Stadium, and a large Anheuser-Busch logo was mounted atop the left-field scoreboard, with the eagle flapping its wings after each Cardinal home run.

A grass field with straight outfield fences extending from the corners to deep center, Sportsman’s Park was the scene of midget Eddie Gaedel’s sole major-league appearance, and, when Bill Veeck owned the Browns, home to the Veeck family in an apartment beneath the grandstand. (SCL)
