A lefthanded pinch hitter and occasional first baseman for most of his career, Spilman
lasted 11 ML seasons with little power and less speed. On April 30, 1987, Spilman
stole the only base of his ML career, and was promptly removed for a pinch runner
by Giants manager Roger Craig, and in 1988 he hit his lone ML triple. In 1977 he
was the Eastern League MVP with a .373 batting average for Three Rivers.
