After parts of three seasons with the Pirates, Spencer became a free agent when Judge
Landis ruled Pittsburgh had unfairly restricted his ML chances. He signed with the
Senators and was their regular catcher from 1930 to 1932, hitting .275 in 1931, his
busiest season.
