Spence was a superlative outfielder with fine range and throwing ability, and a lefthanded hitter with some power. He batted a career-high .323 and led the AL with 15 triples for Washington in 1942, his first year as a regular. In 1944 he drove in 100 runs, but spent 1945 in the military. Holding his own with returning veterans, he hit 50 doubles in 1946, and in 1947 became an AL All-Star for the fourth time. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» December 13, 1941: The Red Sox send P Jack Wilson and infielder Stan Spence to the Senators for Ken Chase and Johnny Welaj.

» May 3, 1944: Joe Cronin, making his 1944 debut at 1B, makes putouts at both ends of a double play, one out at 1B and the other at 3B. The Sox make four DPs and collect 15 hits in beating the Senators, 11–10. Stan Spence and Bobby Doerr each hit a home run, double, and single. The Nats have 16 hits in the loss.

» June 1, 1944: Stan Spence goes 6-for-6 with a HR and five singles in the Senators' 11-5 win over the Browns.

» July 8, 1947: Clutch pinch hits by Luke Appling and Stan Spence lead the AL to a 2-1 win over the NL in the All-Star Game at Wrigley Field. Schoolboy Rowe pinch-hits for Johnny Sain, becoming the first player to appear for each side. Rowe pitched three innings for the AL in 1936.

» June 6, 1948: Ted Williams, Stan Spence, and Vern Stephens hit successive HRs for the Red Sox against Fred Hutchinson of the Tigers. It is the second 3-straight-HR game by the BoSox during the season, with Spence, Stephens, and Bobby Doerr having accomplished the feat off Phil Marchildon of the A's on April 19.

» May 5, 1949: The Red Sox acquire outfielder Al Zarilla from the Browns for Stan Spence, who pinch-hit today, and cash.
