A gangly 6'8" sinkerballer, Smithson led the AL in games started in 1984 and 1985,
winning 15 games each year for the Twins, but was released after a 4-7, 5.94 season
in 1987. He then signed with the Red Sox as a free agent (he had spent his first
six pro seasons in Boston's minor league chain), and was 9-6 as an occasional starter
for the 1988 AL East champs.

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
»June 4, 1989: Don't leave early. Toronto beats Boston 13–11 in 12 innings after trailing 10–0 after 6. Red Sox starter Mike Smithson throws six scoreless innings before leaving in the 7th because of a foot blister. The Jays then score two in the 7th, four in the 8th and five in the 9th, and two more in the 11th on Junior Felix's home run. It is the biggest lead the Red Sox have ever blown and their 12th consecutive loss to the Blue Jays at Fenway.
