Strictly a starter in the minors, Smith possessed an above-average fastball but was never able to gain any consistency at the major-league level. He bounced between the rotation and the bullpen throughout his career, unable to find his niche. His best season was in 1989 with the Minnesota Twins, when he went 10-6 with a 3.92 ERA in 172 1/3 innings.

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
»July 19, 1991:
Cal Ripken Jr. strokes his 20th home run of the season in Baltimore's 4-1 victory over Seattle. He becomes just the 8th player in history to reach that number in each of his first 10 big league seasons and it comes in Ripken's 1,500th consecutive game played. Roy Smith is the winner over Rich DeLucia.
