Smith, the son of long-time major-league executive Tal Smith, was known for his blockbuster trading style as GM of the Padres and Tigers. Hired by San Diego in 1993 at the age of 29, he became the youngest GM in major-league history.

In December 1994 Smith pulled the trigger on a twelve-player deal that brought Ken Caminiti to San Diego. It was the largest trade since the Tigers and Athletics swapped 13 players in November 1957. (JGR)

» June 9, 1993: The Padres appoint 29-year-old Randy Smith as VP of baseball operations and GM, making him the youngest GM in the history of major league baseball.

» April 8, 2002: After opening their season with six straight losses, the Tigers fire manager Phil Garner and general manager Randy Smith. Coach Luis Pujols takes over the reins on an interim basis while team president Dave Dombrowski assumes the GM's responsibilities. Pujols will sign a 1-year deal to become the full–time manager tomorrow. Smith is the 2nd of four GM's to leave their post this season. In early July, Chicago Cub GM Andy McPhail will give up his position to concentrate on his duties as club president, and Brewer GM Dean Taylor will get axed in the last week of the season.
