In his first start, with the Indians in 1902, Cleveland native Charlie Smith beat A's Hall of Famer Rube Waddell, but he soon dropped to the minors. He resurfaced in 1906 to go 31-61 in four years with dreadful Senators teams, but had greater success with the Red Sox (11-6 in 1910) and Cubs (league-high six relief wins in 1912). His brother was National and Federal League infielder Fred V. Smith. (JK)
