FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 16, 1990: Pirates ace John Smiley (12–7) scatters nine hits to top the Cubs Greg Maddux (17–12). The Bucs win 8–6, but the Cubs still lead by five 1/2 games over the Mets and Cardinals.

» March 16, 1992: The Pirates trade P John Smiley to the Twins in exchange for P Denny Neagle and OF Midre Cummings.

» November 30, 1992: The Reds sign free agent P John Smiley to a 4-year contract.

» May 2, 1994: For the first time ever, the Cubs do not don their traditional white uniforms for their game with Cincinnati at Wrigley Field. The change doesn't help, however, as Chicago records its 11th straight home loss, losing 9-0 to John Smiley while wearing blue jerseys. Smiley allows two hits.

» September 22, 1996: Cincinnati SS Barry Larkin hits his 30th home run of the year in the Reds' 6–3 win over the Cardinals in the opening game of a twin bill. He thus becomes the 1st SS to join the exclusive 30-30 club. Mets 3B Howard Johnson is the only other IF to perform the feat. In the nightcap of the twin bill, Reds P John Smiley holds the Cardinals to a single hit—a Royce Clayton single—in shutting St. Louis out by a count of 6–0.

» July 31, 1997: In a swap of the infirmed, the Indians send pitchers Scott Winchester, Danny Graves, Jim Crowell and INF Damien Jackson to the Reds for veteran P John Smiley (9–10 in 1997) and infielder Jeff Branson. The three new Reds pitchers all have had rotator cuff surgery; Smiley is out the year with a broken arm; and Jackson has had knee surgery.
