Slapnicka pitched in the minors for 18 seasons, but won only one game in two brief
trips to the ML. He discovered Bob Feller and Herb Score for the Indians, and scouted
for Cleveland from 1923 to 1941 (he also served as club vice president, 1935-41)
and 1947 to 1960. In between, he worked briefly for the Browns and Cubs. When Commissioner
Landis considered declaring Feller a free agent in 1937, Slapnicka suffered a heart
attack.
