Singer's injury-plagued career included two standout seasons of 20-12 (1969) and 20-14 (1973). Teamed with Nolan Ryan on the 1973 Angels' staff, the two combined for more strikeouts than any other duo ever. Ryan's record 383 and Singer's 241 (third in the AL) added up to 624, 32 more than the next-highest total for teammates. The other highlight of Singer's career came when he threw a no-hitter against the Phillies on July 20, 1970. (SFS)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 16, 1967: In a 3–2 Reds' win over the Dodgers, Cincinnati SS Leo Cardenas suffers a broken finger when hit with a pitch by Dodgers P Bill Singer. Cardenas is out until August 15th.

» April 7, 1969: Bill Singer of the Dodgers is credited with the first official save, as Los Angeles defeats Cincinnati 3–2, scoring once in the 2nd and twice in the 3rd off Gary Nolan. All the Cincy scoring came in the opening inning when Pete Rose and Bobby Tolan hit Don Drysdale's first two pitches for home runs. They'll hit leadoff homers again in August.

» July 10, 1970: The Padres launch four home runs in the 9th inning against LA but the power display comes too late and the Dodgers win, 9–7. Wes Parker has two doubles and a triple for LA. For the Padres, Ivan Murrell, Ed Spiezio and Dave Campbell hit solo homers off Bill Singer, and Cito Gaston connects for a 2-run homer off Jose Pena. The barrage is one short of the record.

» July 20, 1970: The Dodgers Bill Singer, who a month earlier lost a no-hitter to Atlanta with two outs in the 9th, no-hits the Phillies 5–0, giving up no walks. He strikes out 10 and makes two miscues, one a controversial throwing error that pulls 1B Wes Parker off the base. The Phillies' players argue, contending the soft chopper by Don Money should be a hit. Singer had spent three weeks in the hospital in June for hepatitis.

» April 5, 1971: Decked out in their bright new uniforms, predominantly orange, the Astros open at home with a 5–2 win over the Dodgers. Larry Dierker is the winner over Bill Singer. Astro OF Geronimo and Wynn make great throws to cut down LA rallies.

» November 28, 1971: In a blockbuster interstate trade good for both teams, the Dodgers send Frank Robinson, Bill Singer, Mike Strahler, Bobby Valentine and Bill Grabarkewitz to the Angels in exchange for Andy Messersmith, and Ken McMullen, who returns to the team that signed him. The 37-year-old Robinson will play 147 games, hitting 30 homers and driving in 97 runs in '73, and Singer will combine with Nolan Ryan in 1973 to strike out 674 batters, a 20th Century major-league record for two teammates. Messersmith will win 39 games in the next two seasons for the Dodgers and finish 2nd in the Cy Young voting in 1974.

» November 28, 1972: The Dodgers trade OF Frank Robinson, P Bill Singer, and three others to the Angels for P Andy Messersmith and 3B Ken McMullen.

» June 1, 1976: The Twins trade P Bert Blyleven and SS Danny Thompson to the Rangers for P Bill Singer, SS Roy Smalley, 3B Mike Cubbage, and $250,000. Thompson will die of leukemia on December 10.
