The lefty-hitting catcher had good home run power, belting 18 in 1969 and 23 in 1970 as a platoon player with Cleveland. In 1971 the Indians dealt him to the Dodgers, who sold him to Detroit in August of the next year. Normally a low-average hitter, Sims's .316 down the stretch helped the Tigers to the 1972 division title. (CC)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 2, 1972: The Tigers purchase P Woodie Fryman from the Phillies. Two days later the Bengals will purchase C Duke Sims from the Dodgers. Fryman, just 4-10 for Philadelphia, will go 10-3 for Detroit, while Sims will hit .316 for Detroit in 38 games. The two veterans will spark Detroit to the American League Eastern Division title.

» May 25, 1974: The Yankees send C Duke Sims to the Rangers for P Larry Gura. Gura will go 5–1 with New York but because of reported differences with Billy Martin, Gura will be peddled to KC.

» April 2, 2001: David Wells pitches six strong innings and Magglio Ordonez hits a 3-run as the White Sox beat the Indians, 7–4 in the opener for both teams. Colon gives up all seven Chicago runs. The bright spot for the Tribe is Juan Gonzalez, who bangs two homers, the 1st Indian with two home runs on Opening Day since Duke Sims, in 1968. Gonzalez also became just the 4th player to twice hit two home runs on Opening Day (Eddie Mathews: 1954, 1958; Raul Mondesi: 1995, 1999; Joe Torre: 1965, 1966).
