In his first season, Simpson started the year by winning 13 of his first 14 decisions (the loss came when a dropped pop fly let in two unearned runs), including a one-hitter, a two-hitter, and a three-hitter, and was selected for the All-Star team. But shoulder problems limited him to just two appearances after July; he finished 14-3, 3.08. The injury hampered him for the rest of his career; in his only other good season, 1972, he went 8-5 with a 4.14 ERA. (SH)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 7, 1967: The last-place Yankees have the first pick in the free-agent draft and use it to take Ron Blomberg. With the next pick, the Cubs tap SS Terry Hughes, who will have just 86 ML at bats. All 20 first-round picks are high school players, and only 11 will eventually reach the major leagues, including John Mayberry (#6, Astros), Jon Matlack (Mets), Wayne Simpson (#8, Reds), Ted Simmons (#10, Cards), and Bobby Grich (#20, Orioles). The O's take Don Baylor with their 2nd pick, then in the secondary phase, select P Mike Adamson. Adamson will leap directly to the O's, debuting July 1, the first player in draft history to bypass the minors. Other selections today include Dusty Baker (26th round, Braves), Matlack (1st round, Mets), Steve Yeager (3rd round, Dodgers) and Richie Zisk (3rd round, Pirates), The Phils strike out as none of their picks will reach the majors.

» April 9, 1970: Cincinnati's Wayne Simpson makes his ML debut, shutting out the Dodgers, 3–0 on two singles, one each in the 6th and 7th.

» April 19, 1970: A first-inning double by Ken Henderson is the only hit off Wayne Simpson as the Reds beat the Giants, 6–0. This is Simpson's 2nd shutout in three starts.

» June 7, 1970: The rampaging Reds move to nine game ahead in the NL West with a 10–2 walloping of the Mets. Johnny Bench, with five RBIs, and Lee May crash homers to back Wayne Simpson's 8th win.

» July 5, 1970: Reds rookie Wayne Simpson (13–1) win his 10th straight, beating the visiting Astros, 3–1.

» July 31, 1970: The Reds lose a doubleheader to the visiting Cubs, 7–1 and 11–7, and lose rookie star Wayne Simpson, who tears the rotary cuff in his pitching arm. Simpson will come back, but will never be the same, going 22–28 in the rest of his career.

» November 30, 1972: Twelve transactions, involving 36 players, take place. Among those sent to new clubs are OF Larry Hisle (to the Twins), 2B Dave Johnson (Braves), OF Del Unser (Phils), Oscar Gamble (Indians), Cesar Tovar (Phils) and OF Hal McRae and P Wayne Simpson (Royals).
