Shields spent seven seasons in the Red Sox minor league system and two more with the Richmond Braves (International League) before finally reaching the ML with Atlanta in 1985. He was traded to the Royals for Daryl Motley September 1986 and then to Seattle as part of a package for Danny Tartabull three months later, before signing with the Yankees as a free agent before the 1988 season. In 1987 he spent a month on the DL after Kirby Puckett hit him in the face with a line drive. (SCL)
