Shepard earned three degrees at Stanford and was elected to the university's Hall
of Fame. He was a member of TSN's All-Rookie Team and was the Pirates' Rookie
of the Year in 1954, when he batted .304. After struggling in 1955-56, he turned
to a career in business.
