    A spitball pitcher, Shellenback was at Vernon in the Pacific Coast League when the pitch was outlawed for pitchers coming up to the majors. Still allowed to throw his spitter in the minors, he compiled a 295-178 record in 20 PCL seasons. He later served as 9> x x pitching coach for several ML clubs, most notably the Giants. (DB)
