Despite a weak bat, Shea parlayed good defense and deft handling of pitchers into
eleven ML seasons, ten as a backup. In 1933, in a classic one-sided trade, the Browns
sent star catcher Rick Ferrell and pitcher Lloyd Brown to the Red Sox in exchange
for Shea and cash. Shea hit .242, the only year in which he played in more than half
his team's games.
