In the midst of a discouraging 1884 season with Detroit (9-18), Shaw abandoned the
National League for Boston of the Union Association, where he went 21-15 and struck
out a then-ML record 8.81 batters per nine innings. His 451 strikeouts rank fourth
on the all-time single-season list.
