Shannon was a college correspondent for the Boston Globe while attending Harvard. When the Globe's sports editor died, Shannon was named named to replace him and held that position for 32 years. A frequent contributor to magazines, he was a charter member of the BBWAA and ultimately carried card No. 2, indicating he was second in senority among all members. He was 66 x x president of the BBWAA at his death. (NLM)
