At mid-season in 1958, Semproch, a 27-year-old rookie, led all NL pitchers in wins with 11. But he faltered in the second half and finished 13-11 with the last-place Phillies. Bothered by asthma, he struggled through the remaining three seasons of his career. (RTM)

The Phils ship Chico Fernandez and Ray Semproch to Detroit for Ken Walters, Ted Lepcio, and minor leaguer Alex Cosmidis. The Cuban born Fernandez was the first black for the Phils, and will be the second black to play for Detroit.
