First signed by the Cardinals, the Mets got Searage in a 1979 straight-up trade for Jody Davis. Searage drifted through six organizations and didn't spend a full season in the majors until 1987, when the Chicago White Sox acquired him. As a situational lefthanded reliever, he led the Sox with 58 appearances that year. He threw hitters off with a herky-jerky delivery that included a tucking of his head. In 1984 he recorded a 0.70 ERA in 21 games and finished with 28 consecutive scoreless innings to equal a Brewers record.
