Scott led the NL in appearances and had a 15-13 mark for Cincinnati in 1921, but when he tore a shoulder muscle in April 1922, the Reds released him. He signed with the & x x Giants and went 8-2, then added a four-hit shutout of the Yankees in the World Series. His best season followed in 1924 when he went 16-7 for the Giants' fourth straight NL pennant winner. He lost 21 games in a season twice, in 1920 with the Reds and in 1927 with Phillies. Batting righthanded he had a career average of .275, topped by .341 in 1921. (NLM)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» October 4, 1917: After Brooklyn beats the Braves, 5–1 in game one, Boston responds with a 4–2 victory in the nitecap. Southpaw Art Nehf's 40-inning scoreless streak is ended by the Robins in the 8th when a walk, single and sac fly produce a score. He holds on for the win over Leon Cadore and finishes the year at 17–8 for the 6th-place Braves. In game one, Sherry Smith evens his season's record, beating Jack Scott.

» February 18, 1922: The Reds trade P Rube Marquard (17–14) and SS Larry Kopf to Boston for P Jack Scott (15–13).

» September 23, 1922: Rogers Hornsby belts his 40th homer, a solo shot in the 6th at the Polo Grounds, but the Giants hang on to win, 7–5. Ross Youngs saves a homer in the 9th when he leaps to snag Jack Smith's drive. Jack Scott hits 4-for-4 and goes all the way for the win to keep the Giants six games in front of Pittsburgh.

» October 6, 1922: The Giants Jack Scott (8–2 with the Giants) fires a 4-hitter as a surprise starter in game three, after Hugh McQuillan (6–5 with NY) warms up to face Waite Hoyt (19-12). Scott gets the Yanks to hit 18 grounders. Frank Frisch’s two RBIs are more than enough in the 3–0 win. With two hits in each game so far, Frisch will bat .471. Heinie Groh, hitting safely in every game, will be at .474.

» September 19, 1925: At Chicago, the Cubs beat the Giants, 6–2, behind Sheriff Blake. Taking the loss is Jack Scott, the first of 10 straight losses the Cubs will hand him.

» January 9, 1927: In a 3-way deal, P Burleigh Grimes goes from Brooklyn to the Giants, C Butch Henline goes from Philadelphia to Brooklyn, and Giants 2B Fresco Thompson and P Jack Scott wind up with the Phils.

» June 19, 1927: At Cincinnati, Phils pitcher Jack Scott performs an ironman feat by pitching two complete games of a doubleheader, beating the Reds 3–1 before losing, 3–0. The 35-year-old is the last to pitch two complete games in one day. Scott allows six hits in the opener and nine in the nitecap, with two going for extra bases. The Reds score in each of the first three innings of the nitecap and Eppa Rixey scatters seven hits to win. Carl Mays loses the opener.
