This knuckleball reliever set a since-broken ML record in 1962 by making relief appearances in nine consecutive games for the Cubs, climaxed by a pair of wins in a doubleheader against the Phillies. He had 14 saves and a 1.64 ERA on the 1964 NL-champion Cardinals, but he lost Game Three of the WS when Mickey Mantle homered off his first pitch after Schultz relieved in the bottom of the ninth. » May 15, 1962: Cubs P Barney Schultz ties Roy Face's major-league record by relieving in his 9th consecutive game for Chicago. Today's effort doesn't help as the Cubs lose, 6–5 in 13 innings against the Mets. Roger Craig, enroute to a 10–24 year, is the winner, while Tony Balsamo loses to notch his only career decision.

» July 31, 1964: The Cards send down Glen Hobbie and bring up knuckleballer Barney Schultz.

» October 7, 1964: Ailing Whitey Ford struggles as St. Louis wins the World Series opener 9–5 at Busch Stadium. Mike Shannon homers in a 4-run, St. Louis 6th inning. Tom Tresh loses Flood's triple in the rally. Ray Sadecki and Barney Schultz combine for the win.

» October 10, 1964: After Jim Bouton and Curt Simmons battle to a 1–1 tie through eight innings, Mickey Mantle homers on Barney Schultz's first pitch in the 9th, and the Yankees win 2–1.

» September 27, 1968: For the 2nd time in two years, the Cards sign free-agent P Barney Schultz to enable him to qualify for pension time. Schultz was released last October 8.
