Schulmerich was a powerful, 5'11" 210-lb righthander who starred as a fullback at Oregon State. He once batted .380 for Los Angeles of the Pacific Coast League. He hit .318 for the Braves and Phillies in 1933, but was soon back in the PCL. (JK)

» May 16, 1934: The Reds send pitcher Syl Johnson and OF Johnny Moore to the Phils for pitcher Ted Kleinhans, Art Ruble, and OF Wes Schulmerich. Moore will turn out to be the class of the swap, hitting .300+ in the next three years.
