    The younger brother of Boss Schmidt, who caught for Detroit from 1906 through 1911, Walter was a light-hitting, platooned Pirate catcher for nine seasons. He had to buy his release from San Francisco (Pacific Coast League) to sign with Pittsburgh. (ME)
