Schmidt was 29 years old when Brooklyn manager Ned Hanlon discovered him pitching
in the Pacific Coast League. In his only ML season, he went 21-13 for Brooklyn in
1903. The Texan returned his 1904 contract unsigned, with a note that simply said,
"I do not like living in the East and will not report." Adamant in his refusal to
continue in the majors, he returned to the West Coast, where the lifestyle better
suited him.
