A brawler who boxed an exhibition with heavyweight champ Jack Johnson, Schmidt became the leader of three Tiger pennant winners (1907-09) by whipping Ty Cobb in several fights. He made the last out in consecutive World Series in 1907-08, the only player ever to do so. Walter Schmidt was his younger brother. (JK)

Leading 3–2 in the 9th, Bill Donovan faces pinch hitter Del Howard with 2 on and 2 outs. He fans Howard, but the ball gets away from Schmidt, and the tying run scores. Darkness ends the game after 12 innings.
