A brawler who boxed an exhibition with heavyweight champ Jack Johnson, Schmidt became
the leader of three Tiger pennant winners (1907-09) by whipping Ty Cobb in several
fights. He made the last out in consecutive World Series in 1907-08, the only player
ever to do so. Walter Schmidt was his younger brother.
