A mainstay of the Tiger bullpen in the early 1970s, Scherman relieved 170 times in
three years. In 1971 he set a club record with 69 appearances, earning 20 saves and
an AL-high 10 relief wins. In 1973 Tiger manager Billy Martin ordered him to throw
a spitball in retaliation for Gaylord Perry's alleged use of the illegal pitch. The
resulting uproar led to Martin's dismissal.
