Hall of Famer Buck Leonard said that Negro Leaguer George Scales was the greatest
curveball hitter he ever saw. Scales was a clutch, contact hitter and a quality infielder
who compensated for his lack of speed with intelligence and alert play. He batted
fifth for the great 1931 Homestead Grays, the team that won 136 games while losing
17; its members included Josh Gibson, Oscar Charleston, Ted Page, and Vic Harris.
Scales has been credited with teaching Junior Gilliam (who went on to star for the
Dodgers) to switch-hit during their years with the Baltimore Elite Giants.
