His speed and power made eight big league teams give this 6'1" 185-lb righthanded hitter a chance. Only in his rookie year with the Phillies in 1962 was he a regular, because he never became a consistent hitter. His best season came with the 1970 Brewers, when he had career highs of 12 HR, 50 RBI, and a .279 average in 274 at-bats. (AL)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 20, 1967: At Wrigley, the Cubs pound Brooklyn, 20–3 to give Ken Holtzman (5–0) a win before he leaves tomorrow for a 6-month tour of duty in the Army. The hitting stars are Adolpho Phillips with 6 RBI, Randy Hundley with a grand slam, and Glenn Beckert with a double and an inside-the-park HR. Rounding out the scoring is Ted Savage's steal of home. In the Dodger dugout in 7th inning, Don Drysdale waves a white handkerchief of surrender. Holtzman will pitch on weekend passes and tack on another 4 wins without a loss.

» April 23, 1968: The Cubs make a canny trade acquiring P Phil Regan and OF Jim Hickman from the Dodgers for OF Ted Savage and P Jim Ellis.

» July 18, 1969: At Crosley Field, the Astros take a 9–0 lead after batting in the 6th, only to lose, 10–9. The Reds score a run in the 6th, two in the 7th, and tie it with six in the 8th. Cincy wins it in the 11th when Ted Savage drives in a run off Jack Billingham.
