Sasser saw the most playing time in 1989, when both Gary Carter and Barry Lyons went
on the DL. The contact hitter's lack of power and low on-base average prevented him
from winning the job, and observers blamed his game-calling during Carter and Lyons's
absence for the problems of the Mets' pitching staff.
