Sasser saw the most playing time in 1989, when both Gary Carter and Barry Lyons went on the DL. The contact hitter's lack of power and low on-base average prevented him from winning the job, and observers blamed his game-calling during Carter and Lyons's absence for the problems of the Mets' pitching staff. » July 30, 1987: The Pirates trade P Don Robinson to the Giants for minor league catcher Mackey Sasser and cash. The Indians trade fading veteran Steve Carlton to the Twins for a player to be named later.

» May 4, 1991: Mackey Sasser and Mark Carreon stroke consecutive pinch home runs in the Mets' 6-4, 12-inning win over the Giants. It is the first time the feat has been performed in the National League since 1975.

» December 23, 1992: The Mariners sign free agent C Mackey Sasser to a 2-year contract.
