At Forbes Field, Cubs rookie Ron Santo, making his ML debut, leads Chicago to a sweep of the first place Pirates. Santo is 3-for-7 and drives in five runs as the Cubs win 75 and 76.
» September 18, 1960: Don Zimmer, Ron Santo, and George Altman hit 6th-inning home runs as the Cubs beat the Dodgers 52 at Wrigley Field. Chicago's biggest home run threat, Ernie Banks, sets a record by drawing his 27th intentional walk of the year.
» September 3, 1963: Cubs 3B Ron Santo ties the modern National League record for errors in an inning at 3B with three to help the Giants beat Chicago 163.
» October 1, 1963: The season ends, and there are no full-schedule players in the American League for the first time since 1910. Brooks Robinson played in the most games, 161, missing only 1. Ron Santo, Vada Pinson, and Bill White play the full schedule in the National League.
» September 2, 1965: The Cubs beat St. Louis 53 at Wrigley Field, as Ernie Banks hits his 400th home run, a three-run shot off Curt Simmons, in the 3rd. Simmons teed up the 400th home run of Willie Mays in 1963. Banks will end the season with 28 home runs and 106 RBI. Ron Santo and Billy Williams will also knock in over 100 runs, the only team with three such sluggers, but the Cubs will finish 8th.
» May 29, 1966: Ron Santo's 10th-inning home run gives the Cubs a 32 win over Atlanta. The day before, he beat the Braves with a 3-run, 12th-inning home run in an 85 win.
» May 31, 1966:
Chicago's Ron Santo sets a National League record by appearing in his 364th straight game at 3B, as the Cubs win 21 at Pittsburgh.
» June 4, 1966: The Cubs beat the Reds, 64, as Ron Santo hits two homers and a single. Deron Johnson makes a great catch to rob Santo of a 4th hit.
» June 26, 1966:
Chicago's Ron Santo singles in the first and his next time up is struck in the face by a Jack Fisher pitch that fractures his cheek. Before Santo's at bat, the Mets Ron Hunt and the Cubs Adolfo Phillips had both been hit by pitches. Santo will be operated on tomorrow but will return to action in a week. The injury ends his consecutive game streak at .390, but his hitting streak continues.
» July 4, 1966: Ron Santo sets a modern-day Cubs' record when he hits in his 28th straight game, as the Cubs lose the opener to the Pirates 75. The Cubs win the nightcap 64, but Santo is held hitless. In between the first and second game of the streak, the opener of a twinbill on June 1, Santo had no official at-bats. He received four walks and was HPB. The day before, however, he was 1-for-3, which counts as the actual start of the streak.
» July 3, 1967: At the launching pad in Atlanta, Billy Williams, Ron Santo, and Randy Hundley homer for Chicago, and Rico Carty and Felipe Alou answer for the Bravesall in the first inning, a major league record. Carty adds another homer later, but Glenn Beckert's three-run shot helps put the game out of reach. Ray Culp emerges the winner, 126.
» July 8, 1969: With three runs in the 9th inning, the Mets beat the Cubs 43, cutting Chicago's lead in the National League East to four games. Ron Santo rips into CF Don Young for two misplays in the OF. Santo will apologize tomorrow for criticizing Young, who had left early and didn't take the team bus. Santo will get booed in his first game back at Wrigley.
» July 14, 1969: At Wrigley, the Cubs top the Mets 10 to give Bill Hands (117) the win over Tom Seaver (144). Billy Williams singles home the winner, boosting the Cubs lead to five 1/2 games. After the last out, Ron Santo jumps up and clicks his heels, igniting a roar from the crowd. The Mets think it's bush.
» August 19, 1969: Cub Ken Holtzman (14-7) pitches the 5th no-hitter of 1969. Ron Santo's 3-run home run off Phil Niekro provides first-place Chicago with a 30 win against Atlanta. Holtzman is the first no-hit hurler with no strikeouts since Sam Jones (on September 4, 1923). LF Billy Williams, with his back against the vines, hauls in Aaron's drive in the 7th to preserve the no-hitter.
» September 11, 1969: The Cubs take a 10 lead into the 3rd inning against the Phils when, with a 32 count on Dick Allen and runners on 1st and 2nd, pitcher Dick Selma unexpectedly throws to 3B instead of to home. The throws sails over the head of a surprised Ron Santo and the Phils Tony Taylor scores the tying run. Selma and Santo had practiced the move in spring training, but had never used it during the season. The Phils go on to win again over Chicago.
» April 10, 1970: The Cubs are down 10 with two out in 9th to Montreal when Ron Santo singles and Johnny Callison homers for the 21 win. The Cubs will lose tomorrow then win 11 straight to take over 1st place. During the streak, however, they will suffer the loss of Randy Hundley when he is rammed at home by the Cards Carl Taylor. Hundley will tear his knee and will be out month, then two more, until July 10, with surgery.
» May 12, 1970: At Wrigley, Ernie Banks becomes the 8th member of the 500 home run club, connecting off Pat Jarvis during a 43 eleven-inning Cub win over the Braves. It his 1,600th career RBI. Frank Secory, an ex-Cub, is umpiring this game, and he was one of the umpires in the 1953 game in which Banks hit is first homer. Billy Williams' homer in the 9th ties the game and Ron Santo's RBI single in the 11th wins it. Atlanta's Rico Carty, meanwhile, has three singles and has hit in 30 consecutive games.
» July 6, 1970:
At Wrigley Field, it's all Ron Santo today. Ron's 2-run homer in the opener gives the Cubs a 32 win over the Expos. In the nitecap, Santo drives in another eight runs on two homers and a bases-loaded walk as the Cubs win, 142.
» May 6, 1972: Carmen Fanzone, playing for Ron Santo, who is sidelined with a fractured wrist, hits two homers and drives home four runs to lead the Cubs over the Astros, 64. Juan Pizarro wins in relief.
» August 26, 1972:
At Wrigley Field, Ron Santo records his 2,000th career hit, a 3-run home run off Ron Bryant. Santo's hit, driving in his 1,200th run, is the margin of victory as the Cub top the Giants, 109.
» July 1, 1973:
At Wrigley Field, the Mets edge the Cubs 65 in the 1st game of a doubleheader. Then its the Cubs turn, as Randy Hundley bangs a 9th inning 3-run homer to give Chicago the 65 edge. Ron Santo has seven hits for the afternoon, five in the nitecap
» September 19, 1973:
Chicago's Ron Santo and Billy Williams celebrate their long association together by each hitting their 20th homer of the season in an 86 win over Montreal. It is number 325 for Santo and 376 for Williams in more than 2,000 games together.
» December 5, 1973: Ron Santo becomes the first player to invoke the new 10 and five rule. The Cubs want to trade Santo to the Angels for two pitchers, but he vetoes the deal.
» December 11, 1973: The Cubs come up with a team Ron Santo will agree to be traded to: Southside rivals the White Sox. P Steve Stone and three other players go to the Cubs.
» June 15, 1974:
Baltimore beats the White Sox, 43, in 11 innings. Don Baylor enters the game in the 9th as a pinch runner and makes the record books with a steal and twice getting caught stealing, thanks to misplays by the Sox. Bobby Grich opens with a single and Tommy Davis singles him to 3B. Davis is then picked off, but an error by Dick Allen at 1B allows both runners to move up. After an out, Ellie Hendricks singles Davis home and Baylor pinch runs. Baylor gets caught stealing second but 2B Ron Santo drops the throw from Ed Herrmann. Baylor then swipes 3B and, following a intentional walk to Brooks Robinson, he is caught stealing home, Herrmann unassisted. Andy Etchebarren strikes out to end the unique frame. Baylor's mark is a ML record, but will be matched four times in the National League between 1987 and 1992.
