The last rookie signed by John McGraw, the fast-working control artist failed to impress then and in a later wartime stint with the Indians, but he won 204 games in 16 years in the Pacific Coast League. In a bit part in the movie Pride of the Yankees he was to "bean" star Gary Cooper, actually using a cotton ball. It took him seven tries. "It just wouldn't go straight!" he said. (NLM)
